The Coming Soon! Box Office Report has been updated with the studio estimates for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Be sure to stay tuned there for the final figures on Monday afternoon.

If estimates hold, Universal's Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat squeezed out a win over the three-day weekend with an estimated $25.6 million, a drop of 33.3% in its second weekend. The champ of last week has collected $77 million in two weeks.

Disney's The Haunted Mansion, starring Eddie Murphy, took the second spot with $25.3 million from 3,122 theaters for an average of $8,103 per location. The comedy, based on the studio's theme park ride, has brought in $35 million since opening on Wednesday.

New Line's unstoppable Elf, with Will Ferrell, gained 18.5% in sales for $22.2 million and third place over the three-day weekend. The blockbuster comedy film has already made $130.1 million and will even surpass The Matrix Revolutions ($133.1 million) this week, which cost five times as much to make.

Halle Berry's Gothika continued to do well adding another $12.71 million in its second weekend for a total of $41.1 million, while Russell Crowe's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World had almost an identical $12.7 million in its third weekend to bring its total to $67.5 million.

Dimension's new Bad Santa, starring Billy Bob Thornton, performed very well in the sixth spot. The comedy garnered $12.5 million from 2,005 theaters and managed to average $6,227. It has made $16.8 million since its Wednesday debut.

Ron Howard's The Missing, with Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett, earned $11.7 million from 2,756 theaters for an average of $4,245. The suspense thriller's total sits at $16.5 million for the five days.

Paramount's time-traveling film, Timeline, took in just $8.5 million from 2,787 theaters for a low $3,040 average. The adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel has made $12.6 million since Wednesday.

ID's Todd Hollenshead on Doom

Computer Gaming talked to the agent of ID head Todd Hollenshead who updated the trade about the possible Doom movie adaptation of the popular game.

"They just got a revised draft of the script and it's looking really good," he says. "Our deal is actually putting time pressure on Warner Brothers to not sit and wait on the movie."

Previously the film was at both Columbia and Universal who owned but never developed the property. ID's deal with Warners puts that studio under deadlines to get things done but it also meant little money up front - the basic setup is "You're not paying us, but you're paying someone to meet these deadlines. If you don't get a script by this date, get green lit by this one, if you don't start filming by a certain time, then the rights immediately come back to us".

Warner Bros. is taking Doom very seriously it seems - "I think DOOM 3 is a great property...and so do [Wells and Bonaventura]. So we're focused on a strong script and from there build the momentum to attract the right director and actors".

The Costumes of Star Wars: Episode III

The official "Star Wars" Homing Beacon newsletter included news on the costumes of Star Wars: Episode III. Here's what you can expect!

Many of the elements of Episode III are harbingers of things to come in the original trilogy. The Costume Department has worked diligently to not only foreshadow future events, but also give the final Star Wars chapter its own distinct style. Though the film is the most visually diverse of the saga, spanning the largest number of locales and cultures, there will definitely be costumes that look familiar.

"There's a link of characters between Episodes III and IV," says Trisha Biggar, Costume Designer. "In terms of quality, there will always be a difference between how things look in Episode III and Episode IV, just because we have a great deal more time to achieve things than the people in Episode IV did. But there's always a mind to keep the flow from III into IV, and that's been achieved in color and feel and referring back to Episode IV for the characters who have continuity, rather than trying to copy exactly any particular costumes from Episode IV."

For Obi-Wan Kenobi, his role as a Jedi pretty much defines his overall look, but there is room for subtle progression from The Phantom Menace to A New Hope. "We started in Episode I with a younger version of the costume from Episode IV. We kept that for Episode II. For Episode III, a couple of years have passed, and we changed his costume to blend into Episode IV. We changed the color of his undershirt and the color of his trousers, so he's very slightly becoming a little more like the old Obi-Wan."

Anakin Skywalker clearly has the most profound transition from the prequel to the original trilogy, but the evolution of his Jedi robes from Attack of the Clones to his garb in the new installment is more understated than his future look of dark armor. "We changed his cloak shape, and gave him a new slightly more Jedi-like cloak this time," says Biggar. "We changed his colors, and we darkened them all down, hinting at what he's going to become. Although he was quite dark brown before, there were some lighter aspects. This time, we've really taken shades of dark brown to give him a dark outline even though he's still a Jedi."

Though Senators Padm� Amidala and Bail Organa are absent from the original films, they continue to evolve Episode III, building upon their looks from the previous chapter. "In Episode I, Padm� was very formal and very ceremonial, and that became slightly relaxed for Episode II. In Episode III, we see her in a couple of business-like -- but not heavily ceremonial -- costumes, so generally her look is softer, and we get a chance to see her in a more relaxed state. I think even more relaxed now than she was in Episode II -- softer, more feminine," explains Biggar.

"Though we saw Bail Organa in Episode II as a Senator, George wanted him to look slightly more high tech in a way," she says. "We ended up using more metal pieces in his costumes. He has a high-tech metal comlink, and his ceremonial Senate costume has a beautiful metal collar piece."

"Episode III" is targeted for a May 25, 2005 release date.

Warner Bros. Pictures' highly-anticipated R-rated Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines began unspooling at 8 p.m. Tuesday night in 2,569 theaters and earned an impressive $4.04 million.

"The previews were sensational; it's one of the biggest preview openings of all time," said Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures. "The matinee grosses are very strong, and we are looking forward to a very successful holiday weekend."

Terminator 2: Judgment Day played in 1,390 venues on a Tuesday night in July 1991, with shows beginning at 10 p.m. The James Cameron-helmed picture grossed $2.4 million from those preview shows, and "T2" went on to take in $52.3 million by the end of the 4th of July holiday weekend.

In 1997, PG-13 rated Men in Black opened on a Tuesday night before the wide release on July 2. "MiB" debuted in 2,452 theaters beginning at 8 p.m. and grossed $4.8 million. It went on to take in $51.1 million during the three-day holiday weekend and $84.1 million for the five days, including the preview sales.

Warner Bros.' conclusion to "The Matrix" trilogy, The Matrix Revolutions, dominated the weekend box office with an estimated $50.2 million for the three days and pulling in $85.5 million since its Wednesday debut. The Wachowski brothers film, starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving, played in 3,502 for the five days in North America and averaged an impressive $14,323 from Friday-to-Sunday. The figures didn't beat May's The Matrix Reloaded, however, which made $134.2 million in four days (it opened on Thursday with Wednesday night previews) from 3,603 locations. Overseas, The Matrix Revolutions collected a big $118.6 million from 107 territories to bring its worldwide total to $204.1 million, which is on-par with studio predictions and a new record, surpassing The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which bowed with $188 million over five days last December.

New Line enjoyed second place with the Will Ferrell comedy Elf, which opened to $32.1 million from 3,337 theaters for a strong average of $9,619 per location.

Disney's Brother Bear dipped only 4.1% in its third weekend out in theaters and second weekend in wide release. The new animated film added $18.6 million to bring its sum to $44.1 million so far.

Dimension Films' Scary Movie 3 dropped 44.5% to fourth place, making $11.1 million in its third week. The spoof comedy has garnered an impressive $93.4 million.

Columbia's Radio rounded out the top five with $7.4 million. The drama made another $7.4 million to bring its total to $36.3 million after three weeks.

Celebrating the sixth spot was Universal Pictures with Love Actually, the new romantic comedy from writer/director Richard Curtis. The ensemble film managed to make $6.6 million from only 576 theaters - a cool average of $11,479 million. Look for this film to build more momentum in coming weeks.
